Origin
Robert Yerkes and John Dillingham Dodson were American psychologists whose 1908 experiments showed performance rises with arousal only up to a point — beyond it, pressure degrades performance. Their inverted-U curve bears their names.
Their original 1908 experiments used mice, mazes, and mild shocks; the elegant inverted-U curve now printed in textbooks was largely a later simplification. Yerkes went on to develop the Army Alpha intelligence tests in World War I and to found Yale’s primate research laboratory.
The Law
Some pressure is good. Too little, and the user is bored, drifting, missing things. Too much, and they freeze, click the wrong button, abandon the flow. The peak is in the middle — and where it sits depends on the task.
