Origin
Don Norman is an American cognitive scientist who directed the Institute for Cognitive Science at UC San Diego, served as an Apple Fellow — where he coined the title ‘user experience architect’ — and co-founded Nielsen Norman Group.
The Design of Everyday Things (1988, originally The Psychology of Everyday Things) gave design its core vocabulary: affordances, signifiers, mapping, feedback, and conceptual models. Its examples of confusing doors made ‘Norman door’ a term of art.
The Principles
Good design makes possible actions visible, maps controls to effects, and reports what happened. When users fail, the fault usually lies in the design’s communication — not in the user.
