Moshe Bar and Maital Neta showed in 2006 that people prefer curved objects over sharp ones — angular contours read as threat at a glance. Roundness puts users at ease; sharpness demands attention. Both are tools.

Origin

Moshe Bar and Maital Neta at Harvard flashed pairs of everyday objects — identical except for their contours — for a fraction of a second. Viewers consistently preferred the curved versions, even with no time to reason about them.

Their follow-up work pointed at the mechanism: sharp-angled objects produced more activation in the amygdala, the brain’s threat detector. The preference for curves is not taste — it is a fast, low-level safety judgment that fires before deliberate thought.

The Bias

At a glance, people judge curved contours as safe and approachable and sharp contours as potentially threatening. The response is fast, automatic, and strongest under time pressure — which is exactly how interfaces are seen.

Sharp Reads as Threat

In the follow-up imaging study, sharp contours lit up the amygdala — the brain’s threat detector. Edges and points resemble things that cut and pierce, so they get flagged before conscious thought has a say. Designers inherit that wiring.

Contour Bias in the Age of AI

Generated interfaces ship the same friendly radius by default, and AI products round themselves to feel harmless. Curvature has become a rhetoric — use it honestly.
