Beautiful design is perceived as easier to use.

Masaaki Kurosu and Kaori Kashimura’s 1995 ATM study: interfaces people find beautiful are rated easier to use — regardless of whether they are. Polish buys patience and trust, and can hide real problems.

Origin

Masaaki Kurosu and Kaori Kashimura, researchers at the Hitachi Design Center, tested 26 ATM layouts in 1995. Users’ ratings of apparent ease of use tracked how attractive the layouts were far more closely than how usable they actually were.

Noam Tractinsky replicated the result across cultures in 1997 — “what is beautiful is usable” — and Don Norman later gave it a mechanism in Emotional Design: positive affect broadens thinking and makes people more tolerant of minor difficulty.

The Effect

Users perceive aesthetically pleasing design as more usable — and extend it more patience, more trust, and more forgiveness for small flaws. The effect is real and useful, and it cuts both ways: beauty can mask problems that testing would catch.

Visual care is taken as a proxy for engineering care — often rationally: a team that kerned the headings probably tested the checkout. First-visit trust, sign-up rates, and price tolerance all move with polish.

The effect forgives small flaws, not broken flows. A gorgeous checkout that loses the cart is still a failed checkout — polish multiplies a working experience and merely delays the verdict on a broken one.
